By the beginning of 2014, a new full-service Lunds grocery store will be open in downtown Saint Paul. Lunds is part of The Penfield, a mixed-use building that has 254 market-rate rental units and a wide array of amenities. Construction is well underway and this view from up in the sky shows the progress made since ground was broken in July 2012.
The Penfield covers an entire city block bounded by 10th, Minnesota, 11th, and Robert streets in downtown Saint Paul. The site was previously occupied by the Saint Paul Public Safety Building, which dated back to the 1930s. Part of the historic façade was retained in The Penfield to maintain the historical significance of the public buildings constructed during that era.
The building offers studio, alcove, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units. All will be equipped with stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and an island in the kitchen. Property amenities include: an outdoor swimming pool, fire pit, grills, large green roof patio area, sauna, fitness room, club room, dog wash, dog area on the roof, lobby with a drop-off canopy area, and a full-service Lunds grocery store with a bank kiosk and other services (such as dry cleaning drop-off and a pharmacy). The Penfield is also just one block from light rail transit that will be operating in 2014.
A 30-foot wide public plaza, spanning the entire block on 10th Street, will incorporate public art, including: a rain garden, a historic interpretive display about the former Public Safety Building, the Spirit of the Mississippi statue, cut granite benches, lighted benches and a light wall.
The City of Saint Paul Housing and Redevelopment Authority is the owner of The Penfield. The project management team is comprised of staff from the city’s Planning and Economic Development Department. The expertise of Village Green has been retained for pre-leasing and property management of the building. Anyone interested in living at The Penfield can contact Stefanie Balsis at email@example.com
